Description

DUE TO ARRIVE ON MARCH 29TH AT THE UK OFFICE

The Breitling Cockpit B50 occupies a very unusual place in the watch world. At first glance it resembles a modern pilot chronograph, but in reality it is far closer to a cockpit instrument that happens to be worn on the wrist.

This model was not created as a “pilot-style” watch. It was engineered as a pilot’s operational tool.

The caseback inscriptions — Visual / Signal / Code / Negative / Affirmative / Ground-Air — are ICAO aviation communication references, underlining Breitling’s intention to build a functional aviation instrument targeted at both military, airline and GA pilots rather than a decorative aviation-themed timepiece.

What the B50 Actually Is

This is not a conventional quartz watch.

The Cockpit B50 uses Breitling’s thermo-compensated SuperQuartz movement (Calibre B50), which is approximately ten times more accurate than standard quartz movements.

  • Typical quartz accuracy: ±15 seconds per month
  • B50 SuperQuartz accuracy: approximately ±15 seconds per year

This level of precision follows the same timing philosophy used in aviation instrumentation, which explains why professional pilots historically favoured models such as the Aerospace and Emergency.

Movement Functions

The B50 offers an extensive suite of operational features:

  • Perpetual calendar (automatic month and leap-year correction)
  • Second time zone (GMT/UTC)
  • Flight chronograph with block timing capability
  • Countdown timer
  • Two independent alarms
  • Electronic tachymeter
  • Backlit digital displays
  • Rechargeable battery system

It charges via a magnetic USB clip connected to the caseback — meaning the watch never needs to be opened and no battery replacement is required. The seals remain intact, maintaining long-term water resistance. The pilot who owns this watch said it was only used in the cockpit and has not had much use and the battery is performing optimally with several months between charges The watch is currently in the US and the pilot has been deployed to the middle east but will be at our UK location by the end of March.

In practical use, pilots employed the B50 to track fuel legs, flight blocks, reserve timing, and UTC simultaneously. In many respects, it functions more like a wrist-mounted mission computer than a traditional chronograph.

Construction & Wearability

The titanium construction is significant:

  • Although 46 mm in diameter, it wears closer to a 42–43 mm steel watch
  • Extremely lightweight (approximately half the weight of a steel Navitimer)
  • Anti-magnetic protection
  • Shock-resistant module mounting

These watches were built with military aviation and aerobatic flying in mind rather than purely everyday office wear.

Water Resistance

100 metres (10 ATM)

Despite being an aviation instrument, the B50 is better sealed than most mechanical chronographs because its pushers are electronic switches rather than mechanical chronograph actuators penetrating the case.

Power System

Fully charged, the watch typically runs for 2–3 months, depending on backlight and alarm usage.

Instead of stopping abruptly like a conventional quartz watch, the B50 enters a low-power sleep mode while preserving the perpetual calendar and settings — behaviour much closer to avionics equipment than consumer electronics.

Final Remarks

Among modern Breitling models, the Cockpit B50 is one of the most technically serious watches the company has produced in the past two decades. It shares more DNA with the Emergency than with the Navitimer.

It is not a watch designed primarily to impress.

It is a watch designed to be used — and those are usually the ones that end up never leaving the wrist.
